Polestar and StoreDot, the pioneer of extreme fast charging battery technology, have successfully demonstrated the integration of StoreDot’s Extreme Fast Charging (XFC) technology in a car for the first time.
The test used a prototype Polestar 5, which was charged from 10 to 80% in just 10 minutes. The prototype recorded a consistent charging rate, starting at 310 kW and peaking at over 370 kW towards the end of the charge.
This world-first demonstration used silicon-dominant cells – rather than individual cells in a lab environment. The 77 kWh battery pack – which has the potential to be scaled up to at least 100 kWh – could add 320 km of range to a mid-sized electric car in 10 minutes.
“Time is one of life’s great luxuries, and as a maker of premium electric vehicles, we must do our part to address one of the biggest barriers to EV ownership – charging anxiety. With this new technology, on longer journeys, when drivers do need to stop, they could soon be back on the road faster than ever before. In fact, the time it takes could become comparable to a gasoline car,” comments Thomas Ingenlath, Polestar CEO.
The Swedish electric performance brand’s test also proves that XFC technology works with existing DC fast-charging infrastructure, which continues to roll out with more and more high-power 350 kW+ DC chargers.
