The National Road Safety Authority (ANSR) released the Annual Road Accident Report for 2023. The document states that a total of 177.7 million vehicles were inspected and that the most common offense was speeding, with a percentage of 58.1%.
However, the violation rate (number of speeding violations/number of vehicles inspected) decreased by 15.5%, from 0.48% in 2022 to 0.41% in 2023.
"There were increases in all types of violations, with the most notable being, in addition to the absence of insurance and the mandatory periodic inspection (+79.5% and +38.0%, respectively), those related to child restraint systems (+10.6%)", reads the Annual Road Accident Report.
Regarding accidents in Portugal, during the year 2023, 36,595 accidents with victims were recorded, 479 fatal victims, 2,646 seriously injured, and 42,890 slightly injured.
