Airbag problem forces Citroën to recall 600,000 cars
Affected models are the C3 and the DS3.

Citroën has called more than 600,000 C3 and DS3 cars back to the garage in around 20 countries over an airbag fault in models produced between 2009 and 2019, which are no longer on sale.
A total of 605,772 vehicles are affected by the recall, across around 20 countries in southern Europe, the Middle East and North Africa, the carmaker told AFP.
The recall affects 497,171 Citroën C3s and 108,601 Citroën DS3s, "models that were produced between 2009 and 2019, which are no longer on sale", said a spokesman for the brand, which is part of the Stellantis group.
The recall is linked to the "degradation of the gas" contained in the airbags, "which ages over the years", the spokesman said.
"When the gas degrades, it can affect several components that make up the airbag, and when it is activated in the event of an accident, there may be particles or small pieces that can be ejected with the inflated cushion and cause injuries," he added.
According to a product recall notice published on May 3 on the French website Rappel Conso, "the propellant (gas) in the driver and passenger airbags may deteriorate over time. In the event of an accident in which the airbags are activated, they could rupture with excessive force, injuring the vehicle's occupants.
Recall letters were sent out at the beginning of May by Citroën to the owners of the vehicles concerned, who should register online before being contacted to schedule the repair at a dealership covered by the manufacturer.
