The municipal council of Grünheide, on the outskirts of Berlin, Germany, approved plans to expand Tesla's factory there on Thursday night.
The green light came after a scaled-down proposal was passed with 11 votes in favor and six against, with two abstentions, the German news agency dpa reported.
The proposal was reduced in size in order to cut the number of trees that would need to be felled.
In February, Grünheide residents rejected Tesla's initial expansion plan, which would have involved clearing more than 100 hectares (247 acres) of forest to add a logistics and cargo area to the factory that opened in 2022.
Activists have since held regular demonstrations outside the factory, raising concerns about deforestation and water usage.
“Stop Tesla,” a group backing the protests, said Friday it was disappointed by the council's decision and vowed to continue demonstrating. “We must stay here to protect the water and the forest as long as our protection is needed,” the group said in a statement.
