Continental’s Portuguese plant, located in Lousado, already has its production completely CO2 neutral. How? This goal was only achieved due to the innovative boiler that works entirely with electricity.
And, if before the energy to generate steam was natural gas, now it comes from the electricity captured from the factory’s photovoltaic panels. In the tire industry, much of the energy consumed is used to generate steam, something that is necessary to shape the tires. This process is known as vulcanization.
The Portuguese factory, which has an annual production of 18 million tires, is now seen as an example. By 2040 at the latest, Continental intends to completely change all tire factories to CO2-neutral production processes.
"In Lousado, we are demonstrating that even large tire factories can achieve CO2-neutral production. For this, the availability of competitively priced renewable energy sources is crucial,” explained Dr. Bernhard Trilken, head of the manufacturing and logistics business unit.
"We are preparing all of our factories so that they can use as much renewable energy as possible. The commissioning of our electric steam boiler in Lousado is the start of an exciting learning curve," he added.
