The initiative emphasizes "the importance of the values of democracy, freedom, equality and solidarity", established in Portugal "after a dark period of 48 years" under the dictatorship of Salazar and Caetano, informs the City Council in a statement sent today to the Lusa agency.

The opening ceremony, on Freedom Day, at 11:30 am, is "the high point of the local commemorations" of the half-century of the Carnation Revolution, organized by the municipality of Tábua, in the district of Coimbra, whose executive has Ricardo Cruz as president.

"Commemorating democracy and freedom is a civic act that should involve the entire community, transmitting to the younger generations the principles and values associated with April 25, and it is essential to continue working towards ensuring their defense and appreciation", says Ricardo Cruz, quoted in the note.

The PS mayor also emphasizes that "the ideals of April continue to be rooted and consolidated" among the population of the municipality.

Also to "recall this remarkable date in contemporary Portugal", the program starts at 9:30 am, with the hoisting of the national and municipal flags, to the sound of the Tábua Artistic Academy and Polyphonic Choir, which sing songs related to the event, followed at 10:00 am by a solemn session in the noble hall of the Town Hall.

At 4:30 pm, there will be a visit to the April Panel, in the access tunnel to the António Castanheira Neves square, a painting alluding to April 25 executed by Editorial Moura Pinto, which precedes the performance of the musical theater play "Era o Dia de Cantar", by the Contracanto Association, at the Tábua Cultural Center, at 5:00 pm.

50 years ago, on April 25, 1974, the Armed Forces Movement (MFA), involving mainly young captains from the three branches of the Armed Forces (Army, Navy and Air Force), successfully executed a coup that overthrew the fascist dictatorship, whose strategist was the then major Otelo Saraiva de Carvalho.
