The Cloisters of the Monastery of São Vicente de Fora, in Lisbon, will host the immersive show 'Caravaggio's Living Paintings' from 22 to 26 May.

During the show, 21 works by the renowned Italian painter will be recreated through the monumental interpretations of five actors, in a sumptuous combination of theatre, classical music and Baroque painting, staged by Ricardo Barceló.

Among the 'living paintings' are 'The Raising of Lazarus', 'The Decapitation of John the Baptist', 'The Repentant Magdalene' and 'The Burial of Saint Lucy'.

The Portuguese production thus brings artistic reality to life, and recreates on stage, in real time, a sequence of 21 of Caravaggio's paintings, which mainly depicted religious themes. A work done with light in order to emulate the characteristic luminous effect of the works of the famous Baroque painter, known for Tenebrism.

Presented for the first time in 2019, the dramatisation by director Ricardo Barceló has had several sold-out tours from north to south of the country and has already been seen by more than 10,000 people.

The event thus returns to Lisbon for a new season of six exclusive sessions. From 22 to 24 May at 9:30 pm, 25 May with two sessions at 6 pm and 9:30 pm and on 26 May at 6 pm.

Tickets cost 25 euros and can be purchased at the venue or at See Tickets, for an additional 1.75 euros in fees.
