"Within the scope of private donations, this donation is the most important in the entire history of the museum and witnesses the recognition, on the part of the collectors, of the Museu Nacional Soares dos Reis' ability to preserve, study, disseminate and enhance a collection gathered over decades", can be read in a statement from the institution.
In the same text, the national museum based in Porto indicated that the Cândida and Vasco Duarte Silva collection is composed of hundreds of works of painting, sculpture, faience, goldsmithery, among other formats.
"It is a very relevant collection, it is a huge opportunity because we are going to incorporate several hundred pieces", the director of the Museu Nacional de Soares dos Reis, António Ponte, told Lusa, stressing that it is "a very diverse collection that comes to enrich and even fill some gaps in the museum's collection".
The list shared by the museum points to names such as Abel Salazar, Alvarez, Ana Jotta, Ana Vidigal, António Carneiro, António Palolo, Artur Loureiro, Ayres de Gouveia, Cargaleiro, Cruzeiro Seixas, Eduardo Luiz, Ernesto Condeixa, Francisco José de Resende, Fernanda Fragateiro, Francisco Smith, Jorge Queirós, Júlio, Júlio Resende, Mário Botas, Marques de Oliveira, Nikias Skapinakis, Paula Rego, Pedro Cabrita Reis, Pedro Portugal, Sá Nogueira, Sousa Pinto, among others.
Asked about the temporal scope of the artists in question and their integration into the museum, given that several contemporary figures are included, António Ponte stressed that, although the Soares dos Reis is more closely linked to 19th century art, there is also a connection to the last artistic decades, taking into account, in particular, the history of the Centro de Arte Contemporânea (CAC), which operated between 1976 and 1980 and gave rise to the Fundação de Serralves.
"In this logic of this work, of this contemporaneity, these artists will have a place for what we want to be the rotation of the pieces on display", said António Ponte.
The museum director recalled that, in June, an exhibition dedicated to the CAC, curated by Miguel von Hafe Pérez, will be inaugurated in the context of the 50th anniversary of April 25.
Regarding the donated collection, the museum stressed, in a statement, that the pieces in question will now be studied and treated in order to be included in both the long-term exhibition and temporary exhibitions.
