The workers -- 47 guards, a restorer and a bookstore employee, out of a total of about 700 employees -- sent a letter to the president of the Vatican Governorate, Fernando Vèrgez Alzaga, in which they threaten to sue Vatican City if some norms that govern work within that city-state are not changed, according to the Italian newspaper Corriere della Será.

If it happens, this will be the first collective action of which there is news in the Vatican, where there are no unions, says the news agency EuropaPress.

In the letter, the workers complain, for example, of having to do overtime paid at lower rates or of excessive controls when they are on sick leave, including home visits when they are in consultations.

"Most Reverend Eminence, the working conditions violate the dignity and health of each worker. The mismanagement is evident, which would be even more serious if it obeyed the sole logic of obtaining greater benefits," reads the missive.
