The acoustic guitar used by British singer Eric Clapton to write the hit song "Wonderful Tonight" is to be sold at auction next month.

It is expected to fetch up to $500,000 (£463,000), and bears cigarette burns where Clapton stubbed them out under the strings.

The Reuters news agency, which cites the auctioneers Bonhams, said the musician bought the guitar - a 1974 Martin 000-28 - in the mid-1970s and used it to write a number of songs, including his 1977 hit "Wonderful Tonight", which was inspired by model Pattie Boyd.

Bonhams said the song was written while the singer waited for his then girlfriend to get ready for a party. The guitar also has a sticker on its side which reads "She's in Love with a Rodeo Man", a reference to the hit song by country star Don Williams, the auctioneers added.

"Clapton is... one of the greatest living guitarists of all time and to have a guitar from such an important time in his career, associated with such an important song, is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity," Claire Tole-Moir, Bonhams' director of popular culture, told Reuters.

Clapton sold the guitar at a charity auction in 1999, and it will go under the hammer again on 12 June at Bonhams Knightsbridge in London.
