The City Council, in collaboration with the Infante D. Pedro School Group and the Parents and Guardians Association, "promises to enchant residents and visitors with an event full of entertainment, culture and gastronomy".
"The Penela Castle will once again be the stage for a journey through time, transporting visitors to the Middle Ages", says the local authority, led by Eduardo Nogueira dos Santos, in a statement sent today to the Lusa agency.
With a "wide variety" of initiatives and free admission, the program for the two days includes music, dance and theater shows, demonstrations of medieval crafts and activities for children, having been "designed for all tastes and ages".
"We are excited to once again welcome the community and visitors to celebrate our rich historical and cultural heritage", said the Mayor, quoted in the note.
For Eduardo Nogueira dos Santos, the revivalist program is a "very special" achievement that "celebrates tradition and medieval gastronomy".
In addition to enhancing Penela's cultural heritage and promoting visits to the municipality, the Medieval Fair "provides moments of fun and conviviality for the Penela family", he added.
The program begins on Saturday, at noon, with the royal wedding of D. Afonso IV and the Infanta Beatriz, daughter of Sancho IV of Castile and Maria de Molina.
At 12:30 pm, after the "troubadour parade through the streets of the town", the marriage is announced by heralds and troubadours of the mayor's office, followed, at 1:00 pm, by the "lavish banquet in the market taverns".
The "royal procession" is scheduled for 4:30 pm, with a set of afternoon moments, such as folias, dances, revelry and blessing of the fair.
On Saturday night, the party ends with the "ancestral fireworks" and the "round of alvazis and aguazis in the castle's adarves", between 00:00 and 00:45.
On Sunday, from 12:00 pm, it is dedicated to the wars of the kingdom of Portugal and the Algarves with Castile and the battle of Salado, between Christians and Moors of the Iberian Peninsula, in which D. Afonso IV distinguished himself at the head of his troops, which earned him the nickname "The Brave".
Father of D. Pedro I, Afonso IV also became famous for having ordered the killing of Inês de Castro, in the context of the love of the Castilian noblewoman with his son, a tragic episode that will have occurred in Coimbra, on the left bank of the Mondego river.
The Medieval Fair, coinciding with the last two days of the second Gastronomic Week of Hunting, ends with "exorcisms of witches, demons and all the evils that torment us", at 7:30 pm, followed by the "sealing of the barrels, baskets and almotolias", at 8:00 pm.
