With the title "Eduardo PESSOA Lourenço", the exhibition includes works by and about Fernando Pessoa, "one of the great and heterodox intellectual interests" of the essayist Eduardo Lourenço (1923-2020), whose birth centenary is still being commemorated.

"Eduardo Lourenço always had the intention of leaving books for others to read", said Maia do Amaral, one of the curators, indicating that the exhibition "is also an ode" to the former student and assistant of the Faculty of Letters of the University of Coimbra (FLUC) "as a designer of libraries".

The curatorship also includes FLUC professors António Pedro Pita and Manuel Portela (director of the General Library) and geographer Rui Jacinto, from the Centre for Iberian Studies (CEI).

The exhibition on the Pessoa library donated by Eduardo Lourenço to the BGUC includes books on the also modernist Mário de Sá-Carneiro, who had Fernando Pessoa as his best friend.

The global programme, also with conferences and guided tours, reflects "the author's relationship with books", said Maia do Amaral, recalling that the philosopher "was passionate about very eclectic readings".

He, who "loved and needed" his books, "decided in life to let them go with the evident intention of giving them to others to read", having distributed his private library to different cities and entities, the curatorship states in a note sent to Lusa.

"Separated by his hand, according to his own criteria, there are about 500 works, incorporated in 2014, which are treated and accessible in our integrated catalogue", according to the BGUC.

With free entrance, the exhibition can be visited in the Sala de São Pedro of the General Library until 30 July, from Monday to Friday, from 2:30 pm to 5:30 pm, except on holidays.

Jointly organised by the BGUC and the CEI, from Guarda, with the support of the municipality of Coimbra and the League of Friends of the General Library, it is part of the programme of the centenary of Eduardo Lourenço.

It is also possible to attend several conferences with the participation of specialists such as João Dionísio, Osvaldo Manuel Silvestre and A. E. Maia do Amaral, as well as guided tours by the curators.
