The European Broadcasting Union today justified to the European Commission the ban on the European Union flag at this year's Eurovision Song Contest with the "sensitive global political context" and security concerns at the venue.

According to a letter addressed by the European Broadcasting Union to the EU executive, released by vice-president Margaritis Schinas on social media network X, there were "certain challenges" in the organization of the festival which took place this year in the city of Malmö, Sweden.

"We would like to clarify that there has never been a ban on the EU flag at the Eurovision Song Contest and this has been visible in previous editions," the audiovisual body warned.

The use of flags during the festival, almost always by people in the audience, is "based on a positive approach, an inclusive list of flags from the participating countries and also the rainbow flag" (alluding to the LGBTQIA+ community).

"In the 2024 edition, due to the sensitive global political context and serious security risks at the venue, the list of permitted flags, as well as other security policies, was applied in a more restrictive way," added the European Broadcasting Union.

"We want to assure you that it was never our intention to discredit the EU flag as an important symbol of European unity and solidarity, and we assure you that we will review our policy next year," concluded the director-general, Noel Curran, who signed the letter.

Margaritis Schinas commented on social media network X that he "appreciated the positive response" from the European Broadcasting Union.
