"It's not just parties and parties, it's not just leisure. Parties are culture, art, education, learning and a sense of belonging to a territory and we, the executive, must contribute to ensure that people continue to maintain this sense of belonging to their land", said the councillor of the Department of the Vila Real City Council. Mara Minhava.

Today, at a press conference, the municipality presented the programme for the "2024 City Festivities", which start this weekend and will continue until September.

For the councillor, the festivities are also "a way of reviving roots" and are also "economy and tourism".

Mara Minhava believes that the programme will help to attract visitors to the city and that the fact that many initiatives will take place in the historical centre will boost local trade.

The concerts are free and, according to her, the budget for the festivities is around 300 thousand euros.

The programme includes more than 100 activities such as the concerts of Bárbara Bandeira (9th June), Fernando Daniel (13th June), Quatro e Meia (28th June) and Quinta do Bill (29th June).

Calema will perform on Emigrant's Day, on 7th August, but there will also be performances by Karetus, university music groups, and the Army Light Orchestra.

The entertainment programme includes the celebration of the three popular saints - Santo António, São João and São Pedro - and the 53rd edition of the Vila Real International Circuit, which will take place between 28th and 30th July.

On Santo António, the popular parades will be held, with the participation of the 20 parishes of the municipality, as well as the traditional cattle fair and the Maronesa cattle contest.

The São Pedro Fair and the car races coincide on the last weekend of June, which will require a reorganisation of the fair, which will leave Avenida Primeiro de Maio to be installed in the Vila Velha area.

This is also a weekend dedicated to the black pottery of Bisalhães, whose production process has been included in the list of intangible cultural heritage in urgent need of safeguarding by UNESCO, including Noite Negra and the traditional panelo game.

The Rock Nordeste festival will take place between 21st and 22nd June and, in July, the Summer Concerts of the Municipal Theatre will start, as well as the Street Arts Cycle -- Arruada - which will extend throughout the city centre.
