With a secular heritage history and considered a "jewel of Renaissance landscape architecture", the Mata do Fontelo has built up, chapels and a palace (which, for many centuries, was the residence of the bishop of Viseu).
The minister said that, "considering the Government's policy and concerns regarding the protection and enhancement of immovable cultural heritage, the historical-cultural and artistic interest of Fontelo should be duly recognised, through its classification as a national monument".
Recalling that there are already studies carried out by the Viseu School of Education and a multidisciplinary project that she was involved in, Dalila Rodrigues guaranteed that "the research carried out in the various areas and in the various domains" of this place in the city that is much sought after by those who enjoy nature and sports will be resumed.
The objective is to "study, rehabilitate, preserving all its historical-cultural characteristics in light of this classification", with resources already assumed by the mayor of Viseu, Fernando Ruas, in a meeting held this morning, he explained.
Speaking to journalists at the end of the ceremony, Fernando Ruas congratulated himself on this announcement and expressed his hope that the guardianship would help the local authority to "give dignity" to Fontelo.
According to Fernando Ruas, the local authority's objective was to "reuse the Renaissance gardens that date back to the time of Francisco da Cremona", the Italian architect who accompanied Bishop D. Miguel da Silva from Rome to Viseu.
"They have been occupied with municipal nurseries. The camellias that are now in the market [02 May] were there, and, therefore, it is the only possibility of recovering those Renaissance gardens", he stressed.
The social democrat mayor said that he would like to coincide the recovery of the Renaissance gardens with the recovery of the building of the former Episcopal Palace, now the Solar do Vinho do Dão.
"We were going to recover the Solar do Dão even if there was no such classification, but now we will have that possibility and, perhaps, the recovery can already be done together", he added.
