The Porto City Council clarified to Lusa today that the public tender for the library's redevelopment will take place in two phases.

The first phase corresponds to the submission of applications and qualification of candidates, which will take place until 11:59 pm on June 28.

The second phase corresponds to the submission of proposals, which will be restricted and depends on the sending of an invitation to the candidates qualified in the first phase. This process will take place until 11:59 pm on October 22.

The public tender limited by prior qualification was published on May 16 in the Official Gazette.

With a base price of 26.5 million euros, the tender sets a maximum period of 1,095 days for the execution of the project, which is estimated to be completed in December 2027.

The project, by architect Eduardo Souto Moura, includes the complete remodelling of the building that, since 1842, houses the Porto Municipal Public Library (BPMP).

The library has been closed since April 1, but the project is only expected to start in December, after the prior approval of the Court of Auditors.

The intervention aims to redevelop the space, dating back to the 18th century, and solve the lack of space for the book archive and other collections.

This project represents a municipal investment of 29.25 million euros, of which 26.5 million euros are for the project and the rest for the project and complementary studies.

The Porto Municipal Public Library has about one million documents, equivalent to 20 kilometres of books and periodicals. Some of these documents, about 70 thousand, will be accommodated in the Almeida Garrett Municipal Library during the works and others will be in custody.

To overcome the constraints with the closure, the municipality announced a package of 15 measures to modernise the services.
