Speaking to the France-Presse agency, the general delegate of the Cannes Film Festival, Thierry Frémaux, said today that Mohammad Rasoulof will be present at the event and that the film "Les graines du figuier sauvage" ("The seeds of the wild fig tree") should be shown on Friday. Thierry Frémaux said that by receiving Mohammad Rasoulof, the festival publicly shows its support "for all artists who, throughout the world, suffer violence and reprisals in the demonstration of their art". "We are particularly excited to welcome him here as a filmmaker with his film", said Frémaux. Rasoulof, 51, who has already been awarded twice in Cannes, was sentenced in January, in Tehran, to eight years in prison and flogging; and the sentence should be executed soon, so the director decided to flee the country. Last week, in an interview with the British newspaper The Guardian, the filmmaker revealed that he managed to cross the border on foot, through a mountainous region, leaving behind all devices with location, and that he arrived safely in Germany. The director intends to show the film in Cannes, but should return to the country "soon" and serve the sentence, wrote the British newspaper. Considered one of the voices of Iranian cinema in opposition to the conservative Islamic regime of Tehran, along with Jafar Panahi or Saeed Roustaee, Mohammad Rasoulof had already been arrested before, because of the films he made. In 2020, the Berlin festival awarded him the Golden Bear for the film "There is no evil", in the absence of the director, detained by the authorities for "collusion against national security and propaganda against the system". The new film, which is part of Cannes, "tells the story of an investigating judge who sinks into paranoia, at a time when major demonstrations are taking place in Tehran", wrote AFP. The Cannes film festival started on the 14th and ends on Saturday, the day when the main awards are announced.
