Directed by Frank Marshall and Thom Zimny, the film unearths never-before-seen video, photos and audio and includes interviews with surviving band members Brian Wilson, Mike Love, Al Jardine, David Marks and Bruce Johnston.  “Making documentaries is like a treasure hunt and you never know when you’re going to find a nugget of gold,” Frank Marshall said at a press conference for the film, which Lusa attended. “And we found a few,” he continued. “It was a journey of discovery and it’s thrilling when you find something that no one has ever seen.”  The filmmakers’ focus was on telling the story of how the band came together and what made them so influential, “and why they had such a huge impact on the music business and music lovers all over the world,” Marshall explained.  Formed in 1961, the band would later be cited by the Beatles as a huge influence, particularly the album ‘Pet Sounds’, which director Thom Zimny singled out.  “The beauty of ‘Pet Sounds’, which is shown in the film and heard in the voices of the guys, is that it challenged the idea of what a pop song could be,” Zimny said. “It created a new sonic landscape.”  The Beach Boys’ sound continues to be cited as an influence today, by artists as diverse as Janelle Monáe, Haim, Weezer and blink-182, and the band are still on the road, touring 63 years after they started out. Al Jardine, now 81, felt that the time was right for the documentary.  “We’re fortunate because we’ve been able to regenerate over the decades, with new fans and a whole new audience,” the musician said. “We used to say we played to the 8 to 80-year-olds. Now we are 80,” he joked. “And we still get some of them.”  Jardine reflected on the universality of music and its ability to remain relevant over time. “I think it will go on forever, because music is fundamentally sound,” he said.  Mike Love, now 83, described the opportunity to share the band’s story and success in a Disney documentary as “phenomenal”, particularly at this point in their career.  “I’m just honoured and thrilled that it’s happening,” he said, noting that the film’s release coincides with the 50th anniversary of the album ‘Endless Summer’, a compilation that brought together the band’s greatest hits – from ‘Surfin’ USA’ to ‘I Get Around’.  “It’s almost miraculous that, over 60 years since we started, we’re still singing these songs and getting such a great response and appreciation,” Mike Love said.  In late April, the Beach Boys played the Stagecoach festival in Indio, at the same venue and under the same organisation behind Coachella. They played to one of the festival’s biggest crowds. The Lovin’ Life Music Fest in North Carolina followed, and the band have more concerts lined up in 2024. “It’s easy to keep going, because the music takes us there,” Al Jardine said.  Mike Love admitted that there is an element of sadness to the film, as Dennis Wilson and Carl Wilson have passed away, and Brian Wilson has been through very difficult times. “There’s some sadness and melancholy there, but also a lot of appreciation for the work that we did together and the love of music that brought us together, in spite of our individual differences at times.”  Love also reflected on how many of the band’s songs bring pure joy to their audience, such as their anthem ‘Good Vibrations’. “Because of all the negativity in the world, our music has always been a release and a joy and a celebration of life,” Mike Love said.  “The music is immortal. We’re not, but the music is,” he said.
