"Generations of moviegoers and theme park visitors have been introduced to the world of Disney through the timeless and enchanting songs of the Sherman Brothers. The duo's work continues to be synonymous with the Walt Disney Company today," the company said in a statement released Saturday.

Richard M. Sherman and his late brother Robert Sherman (who died in 2012) composed the soundtracks of childhoods for millions, the Associated Press noted, having written more than 150 songs for Disney productions.

Their credits include "Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious" and "Chim Chim Cher-ee" from Disney's 1964 musical fantasy "Mary Poppins," which starred Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke and earned the Sherman Brothers two Academy Awards.

They also wrote the music for the animated films "The Jungle Book" (1967) and "The Aristocats" (1970), as well as several "Winnie the Pooh" films and one of the most played songs of all time, "It's a Small World (After All)," for a Disney theme park.

In a 2005 interview with the Associated Press, Richard M. Sherman said working with his brother was almost intuitive, as they had done so their entire lives and tried to constantly top one another.

He also credited Walt Disney with giving him early career advice about the songwriting process: "He said to us one time, 'Don't insult the intelligence of the child, don't talk down to him. And don't write over his head.' So we wrote for the grandfather and the 4-year-old — and everybody in between — and it made all the difference in the world."

In addition to his film work, primarily in the 1960s and '70s, Richard M. Sherman also wrote for Broadway musicals.
