A newly authenticated painting by Italian painter Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio, which had been considered lost for many years, will now be exhibited at the Prado Museum in Madrid, Spain. The work will be available to the public from Tuesday.

'Ecce Homo' depicts the Roman governor Pontius Pilate presenting Jesus Christ to the crowds before he was crucified. The work is one of about 60 known by the Italian master, but it almost escaped the world's attention.

The discovery took place in April 2021, when the Spanish government ordered the suspension of an auction of the work and prohibited its export after the Prado Museum warned that it could be a Caravaggio.

Until then, it was thought that the author was a disciple of the Spanish painter called José de Ribera and that the painting was going to be auctioned with a starting price of 1,500 euros - whereas a work by Caravaggio can reach tens of millions of euros.

Now, three years later, the painting will be exhibited for the first time since it was authenticated. Until October it will be part of a special collection and then it will be moved to the museum's permanent collection for four more months.

The exhibition will open on Tuesday, May 28, and the 'lost' painting will be on display until February 23, 2025.
