Documentary about Orquestra Gulbenkian to premiere in cinemas on June 20
The documentary 'Soma das partes', by Edgar Ferreira, which revisits the sixty years of the creation of the Gulbenkian Orchestra, premieres in cinemas on June 20, it was announced today.

'Soma das Partes' gathers unpublished archive images, records of the Gulbenkian Orchestra's performances, rehearsals and backstage, crosses statements by performers, composers, conductors and musicologists, and reveals how the foundation decided to create this project in 1962.
The documentary is about "the history of an orchestra that has contributed decisively to the enrichment of the Portuguese musical panorama, has recorded more than 70 records and has performed alongside many of the greatest performers in the world of music", says the producer.
The film features, among others, the pianist Maria João Pires, the cellist Maria José Falcão, the conductor Joana Carneiro, the pianist Evgeny Kissin, the conductors Lawrence Foster and Lorenzo Viotti, the composer Luís Tinoco and the musicologist Rui Vieira Nery.
The Gulbenkian Orchestra made its live debut in October 1962, at the Teatro Nacional D. Maria II, in Lisbon, with the name Orquestra de Câmara Gulbenkian, and had only 12 instrumentalists. Currently, its enlarged formation, with more than fifty musicians, allows it to perform a repertoire that can range from the Baroque period to the classical and romantic and contemporary music.
'Soma das Partes' resulted from an order by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation to the producer Galope Films and to the director Edgar Ferreira, who also made a documentary about the Gulbenkian Choir ('Coro -- 60 anos do Coro Gulbenkian') and another about the conductor Michel Corboz, who directed this vocal ensemble, entitled 'A música é bela, os aeroportos são tristes'.
