The announcement of the end of his career was made on the lawn of the Varzim stadium, at the end of the match with Lusitânia de Lourosa, on the eighth matchday of the Liga 3 Champion Qualification phase, which the 'black and white' team won 4-3.

It was in the centre of the pitch, surrounded by his family and all the members of the squad and the technical and management structure, that Ricardo Nunes announced to the fans, through the stadium's sound system, that this would be the final match of his career.

"It was here that I grew up as a man and as a player and, therefore, it makes perfect sense to end my career here. I thank everyone who has supported me over the years. I can only be proud of all these years in football," said the goalkeeper, who was born in Póvoa de Varzim.

Ricardo, who received a large picture from the club with his photograph and the word thank you, spoke of a "happy day with a sense of duty fulfilled".

The goalkeeper said that this moment "had been planned for some time", and announced that he will be a candidate in the elections for the presidency of Varzim, which is currently being managed by an Administrative Commission.

"That will be my next step [to run for president]. I will prepare the project because I want to help the club to continue to grow and evolve to go to the place it deserves, far from the controversies with financial problems and late salaries," concluded Ricardo Nunes.

The now former player, aged 41, began his professional career at Varzim, having also represented União de Leiria, Académica de Coimbra, FC Porto, Vitória de Setúbal and Desportivo de Chaves, returning to the 'club of his heart' in 2020/21 to play for another four seasons, until today putting an end to his career.
