Martínez welcomes debate over size of squad
The coach of the Portuguese men's football team, the Spaniard Roberto Martínez, said today that the coaches had had "a good conversation" at a UEFA event about the size of the squad for Euro2024.

"The most important thing is that the coaches can give their opinions. As coaches, we have knowledge about the needs and the number of players. It has been a good conversation. Let's hope that in the coming days we will know more," said the Spaniard.
Martínez was speaking to reporters in the mixed zone after the first of two days of a UEFA workshop for the Euro2024 finalist coaching teams, which is taking place in the German city of Dusseldorf.
A response from UEFA is expected on this matter, namely on whether the list will contain 23 or 26 players called up for the final phase, in Germany, between June 14 and July 14.
This was the first day of work, with Tuesday including the organisation of matches, security, disciplinary and medical matters, sustainability and contact with the media among the programme.
Roberto Martínez also said today that Euro2024 is "two tournaments in one", starting with the group stage, in which Portugal will face the Czech Republic, Turkey and Georgia.
"It's about us and how we can become the best version of ourselves after these three games. From then on, it's different," he said, about the knockout stage of the tournament.
Regarding the squad, he assumed that it will be "very difficult, with the players that Portugal has available, to make a balanced list and adjusted to the opponents".
