Javi García regrets derby with Sporting and praises Pepe: "He is enviable"
Roger Schmidt's assistant also recalled his time at Real Madrid and Manchester City (opponents in the Champions League) as a footballer.

Javi Garcia, former footballer and current assistant to Roger Schmidt at Benfica, gave an interview to the newspaper AS, released this Tuesday, in which he took the opportunity to assess the performance of the Luz emblem this season - with an exceptional negative note for the derby (2-1) against Sporting - and also to praise the captain of FC Porto, Pepe.
"Pepe at 41? Here, at Benfica and Porto, we don't talk much [laughs]. As a spectator, watching players like him perform at such a high level is admirable and enviable," he began by saying.
"Apart from that negative result [in the defeat against Sporting, by 2-1], the adventure is being fantastic. When I played in Lisbon, my wife and I fell in love with the city and the moment Benfica contacted me to think about going from player to assistant coach, I didn't hesitate and came here. I'm happy," confessed the former Eagles midfielder, between 2009 and 2013, having ended his career at Boavista, in 2022.
"I remember that I arrived at Real Madrid when I was still a child, at 14 years old, and I left at 22. That phase marked me a lot. The experience in Manchester - with the cityzens - was beautiful and allowed me to fulfill the dream of playing in the Premier League, but Real Madrid gave me everything. They trained me as a football player and as a person and I owe them a lot. If I told you that my heart was divided, I would be lying," he said about the duel between Real Madrid and Manchester City, in the 'quarterfinals' of the Champions League.
