FC Porto's two consecutive Primeira Liga defeats, against Estoril (1-0) and Vitória SC (1-2), have not only complicated the fight for the top two spots, which grant access to the Champions League, but have also put the last podium spot at risk, with two opponents already 'on their heels'. Finishing outside the top three in the Primeira Liga has never happened during Pinto da Costa's 'reign', but the threat of Sporting de Braga and Vitória SC is sounding the alarm bells at the Dragão. The team led by Sérgio Conceição remains in third place, with 58 points, just two more than their rivals from Minho (both with 56), and is 'obliged' to secure a place on the podium to mitigate the damage and advance to the Europa League, although that European reality still depends on the outcome of the Portuguese Cup - where they are fighting, precisely, against Vitória SC for a place in the final (already with an advantage obtained in the first leg of the 'semi-finals', by 0-1, in Guimarães). If FC Porto wins the main competition in Portuguese football, they will immediately secure direct qualification, or even if they finish third and, at the same time, guarantee their presence in Jamor. In a different scenario, there are possibilities of access via the second qualifying round of the Europa League or even the Europa Conference League. Be that as it may, any scenario that involves finishing outside the podium of the Primeira Liga will be unprecedented for the president who has been in office for 42 years, given that, to recall the last time this happened, we have to go back to 1975/76, precisely before the arrival of José Maria Pedroto.
Classification Number of times since 1982/83 Seasons
1st place 23 1984/85, 1985/86, 1987/88, 1989/90, 1991/92, 1992/93, 1994/95, 1995/96, 1996/97, 1997/98, 1988/89, 2002/03, 2003/04, 2005/06, 2006/07, 2007/08, 2008/09, 2010/11, 2011/12, 2012/13, 2017/18, 2019/20 and 2021/22.
2nd place 14 1982/83, 1983/84, 1986/87, 1988/89, 1990/91, 1993/94, 1999/2000, 2000/01, 2004/05, 2014/15, 2016/17, 2018/19, 2020/21 and 2022/23.
3rd place 4 2001/02, 2009/10, 2013/14 and 2015/16.
Based on the data from the last 41 seasons, the emblem of the Invicta city ended up celebrating the national championship title in more than half (23), against the 14 seasons in which it was runner-up and the four seasons finished in third place (all in the 21st century). However, the curiosities do not end there.

There is another novelty that extends to Sérgio Conceição

Since Sérgio Conceição took over as coach, FC Porto has always oscillated between first and second place, now preparing to end the season fighting for third - something that, in itself, is already unprecedented for the 49-year-old coach in charge of the dragons. The truth is that, if the path remained somewhat symmetrical, the blue and white team would finish this edition of the Primeira Liga in the lead, since they have been national champions every two years. After a 'non-season' (in which they even 'collected' all the other trophies - Super Cup, League Cup and Portuguese Cup), this season would logically be a 'yes year'. Reaching the title, 13 points behind the leader Sporting, is still mathematically possible, given the 18 points that are up for grabs until the end of the championship, but even the chances of reaching second place (nine points behind rival Benfica) are highly reduced.
