Roger Schmidt took advantage of this Wednesday's press conference to preview the first leg of the Europa League quarter-finals, against Marseille, at Estádio da Luz, to defend Ángel di María.

The Argentinian international has been criticized due to a series of behaviors, on the pitch, the latest of which was last weekend, in a move with Pedro Gonçalves, during the defeat suffered against Sporting, by 2-1. Nothing that, however, 'pinches' him, says the Benfica coach.

"He tapped Pedro Gonçalves in the face, it doesn't seem to me that it was a hard blow or to knock him down. It wasn't 100% correct, but I look at the overall plan. Ángel is a great player, in great shape. He is a very fair player", he began by saying.

"In my opinion, the referees use us to demonstrate their willingness and status. There are many fouls, this season. You see the images, he suffers many fouls and not many free kicks. He can do some things better and has to control his emotions, but we have to respect his career", he continued.

"We need justice, on the pitch. I have no doubts about his personality, respect, and fairness. Of course, he is emotional, but these are his strengths to win games. He is a top player at all levels", completed the German.
