At 6 feet 8 inches (2.03 meters) tall and weighing 514 pounds (233 kilograms) at the peak of his career, Akebono became the first foreign-born yokozuna in sumo history in 1993.
He died earlier this month of heart failure, the Japanese news agency Kyodo reported.

Born Chadwick Haheo Rowan in Hawaii in 1969, he was spotted there by another Hawaiian sumo pioneer: Takamiyama, the first non-Japanese to win a sumo tournament and who became Akebono’s trainer in the sport.

Akebono made his debut in Japan in 1988 on the dohyo, the clay ring where bouts are fought, at the same time as two Japanese brothers and future champions, Takanohana and Wakanohana, who came from a long line of sumo wrestlers.

The rivalry between the three wrestlers filled the pages of Japanese sports publications and captivated the public. Akebono would go on to win a total of 11 tournaments and was chosen to give a sumo demonstration at the opening ceremony of the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano, Japan.

In July 2000, he also became the first recipient of the “Coupe Jacques Chirac,” a trophy that has since been awarded to tournament winners in the name of Franco-Japanese friendship and the former French president’s passion for sumo and Japan in general.

“I was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Akebono, a sumo giant, a proud Hawaiian, and a bridge between the United States and Japan,” Rahm Emanuel, the U.S. ambassador to Japan, wrote on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter).

“Over 35 years in Japan, Akebono strengthened the cultural ties between the United States and his adopted homeland, bringing us all together through sports,” he added.
