Last-minute volte face. After all, both legs of the Europa League quarter-finals between Benfica and Marseille will have visiting fans in the stands, thanks to an agreement reached between all parties involved.

The fear of possible violence at the Orange Vélodrome next Thursday, April 18, led the French authorities to veto the presence of fans of the incarnate. In response, the management led by Rui Costa did the same, canceling the tickets already sold to the opponent.

However, after a round of negotiations, the French internal administration decided to lift the ban, so the eagles did the same, through a statement issued on Thursday afternoon, which means that the first leg, scheduled for 8:00 pm (mainland Portugal time), will have rival fans at Luz.

Here is the statement in full:

"Sport Lisboa e Benfica welcomes the decision of the French authorities to reverse their previous measure and authorize Benfica fans to be present in the 2nd leg of the Europa League quarter-finals.
The objective of Sport Lisboa e Benfica, at all times, has always been to safeguard the rights of its fans and to be able to count on their indispensable support for the team at the Velodrome Stadium.

Given the authorization for the presence of Benfica fans in Marseille, Marseille fans are also authorized to be present at this 1st leg of the Europa League quarter-finals, with the tickets they have purchased becoming valid.

Benfica, Marseille and UEFA have been in contact and in tune, from the first moment, in order to find a solution that best defends football.

Sport Lisboa e Benfica also underlines the commitment and competence of the Portuguese police in monitoring this entire process and expresses special thanks to the Portuguese authorities.

Sport Lisboa e Benfica welcomes this outcome, which is in line with the spirit and essence of the sport. Football without fans is not football"
