Pinto da Costa participated in a campaign action in Vila Verde this Thursday and used the moment to criticize André Villas-Boas once again.
The president of FC Porto once again explained the reasons for his re-election bid and pointed the finger at Joaquim Oliveira, who he considered to be "the person who hates FC Porto the most." "Why did I run for re-election? If I am the most successful president in the world, if FC Porto has won nearly 2600 titles during my terms, seven of them international, why did I run? My family thought I shouldn't do it. I admitted that I might not do it. But when I saw the people who were in the front row at the presentation of another candidate, I thought: 'This is a takeover bid for FC Porto'. When I saw the person who hates FC Porto the most, Mr. Joaquim Oliveira, with a box seat in Alvalade, I thought and immediately saw what was behind this candidacy," began Pinto da Costa, quoted by the newspaper O Jogo. "I don't know if you saw a documentary that was made about my life. Many people were heard, I saw so much praise that I came to think that I had already died. Curiously, the candidate Villas-Boas gave me the greatest praise. He did it spontaneously on that programme. Then, at the presentation, he said that I was the president of presidents, that I deserved all the perks, that I would go down in history... From the moment I ran, it was no longer any use, everything I did was badly done. We didn't do anything, 68 titles is nothing, it should have been 200... Everything is criticized. The people who have always been with me are offended, they enter people's personal lives with lies and slander. I saw and thought that I really have an obligation to FC Porto," he continued. "After 42 years, I thought I had already fulfilled my mission. But when I saw who was behind the candidacy... They are not the ones chosen for the positions, they are pawns in the game. When I saw who was behind it, I realized that my destiny was yet to be fulfilled. I realized that by sacrificing my personal and family life, now I have three grandchildren and I thought I would enjoy them, I understood that I have a commitment to my destiny of serving FC Porto. I have a renovated team for this future. New energy and enthusiasm is needed. FC Porto was born in 1893, but it will be eternal. It is a great race, a great marathon that began on 28 September 1893, but which will have no end. During this race, we take up the baton that our predecessor gave us to take it to the next one with our duty fulfilled," he stressed, complaining about the constant criticism sent by Villas-Boas. "In the other campaign, they speak ill of everything and everyone. In my campaign, I only remember this: FC Porto above all. And since FC Porto is above all, I will not respond to insults, because I have been insulted. I will not respond. For me, what matters is FC Porto. If FC Porto wins, the next day, my concern will be to immediately unite the membership and the fans. We will not offend anyone, that would be giving importance to those who do not deserve it. My partners and I have been miserably slandered. This candidate does not serve me and will clearly not serve you. My concern will be to unite the membership. These insults and slanders do not come from their heads. They come from the ideologues of Cofina and Olivedesportos. But those who vote for me and those who do not vote for me will all be the soul of FC Porto. I dedicate my life to those who have a passion for FC Porto, not to those who are greedy for television rights and such things," he concluded.
