Famalicão-Sporting: 'Round 2' in Minho and a litmus test for the lions

Verde e Brancos return to the north of the country for the second time in less than a week, after the thrashing in Barcelos, to set the schedule with the Famalicenses. A new triumph leaves the way even more open for the title.

Desporto Antevisão

A little over two months later, this Tuesday is the day for Famalicão and Sporting to settle the calendar. After the duel in February this year was postponed due to the lack of policing, the teams from Famalicão and Lisbon will catch up on the I League calendar, with the green and whites able to further strengthen their leadership in this delayed match of the 20th round.

The two teams come to this match in very different phases. Famalicão in February had João Pedro Sousa as coach and was in a negative series of results. On the other hand, the team that is now coached by Armando Evangelista is in the best phase of the season, with two wins and a draw in the last three matches.

Sporting, on the other hand, is calmly leading the I League, something that has not happened in a little over two months. At the time, the Lions were leading the championship, but with a shorter advantage over Benfica. A new triumph in Minho will leave the team led by Rúben Amorim with seven more points than their incarnate rival and with an open path to winning the national championship title.

But an easy match is not expected for the Lions in this second trip to Minho in less than a week. After the rout in Barcelos, the current championship leaders travel to a field where they usually have difficulties as visitors.

The duel between Famalicão and Sporting, which will take place at the Famalicão Municipal Stadium, will be refereed by Fábio Veríssimo, with the match starting at 8:15 pm this Tuesday.

Coaches in direct speech

Armando Evangelista:

Positive series: "We will try, within what we have been doing, to continue adding quality to the moments in which we already have quality. If we can, we will continue to be competitive, seeking victories and dignifying our club. This is the responsibility we seek to have."

Team with high morale: "The good results, what we have done so far, help, of course they do, because they put the spirits of our players high, much more predisposed to listen and to assimilate, without a doubt."

Sporting's moment: "We know that, on the other side, we have a Sporting with high morale. And how? In what they have done. It is up to us to counteract that."

Rúben Amorim:

Checkmate for the title? "I will not say that. Winning or losing, I would have to answer before the other games. If I said that the championship would end here, I would have a problem talking about the match with Vitória. From now on, all matches are decisive. By winning, we look at the championship with one less match and less hope for the opponent. Only when we have the cup in hand will it be checkmate for the title. Until then, we have to look at our matches."

Famalicão no longer has the same coach as the original date of the match: "Because of the advantage they have at this stage, it is different. It has a more decisive character than it had at the time. There were some Famalicão players, at the time... They were going to show up with a line of five, in that match. Now, it could be different. I would say that it will be a similar approach, with the Sporting team, a little bit more with the ball, but some nuances could change, due to the characteristics of the coaches. It would be difficult to win, but we are prepared."

Most important match of the race for the title: "It is very important, there is no way to hide it. We believe, we know that it is possible to be champions, we know the anxiety of the match, but, mainly, for me, it is to take away a little bit of hope from the opponents. That, for me, has an impact on the development of the championship. We are prepared to do our job, we really want to win, especially because we have already been on the other side. In the second year, we were always waiting for FC Porto to lose, and it was difficult. We cannot give hope to our opponents, we really want to win. I will not say that it is very important, otherwise I will have to be here saying, against Vitória SC, that it is the most important. The fewer matches there are, the more we have to kill the hopes of our opponents and gain strength."
