Fernando Carro, CEO of Bayer Leverkusen, gave an interview to the Spanish newspaper AS on Monday, in which he revealed how he managed to convince Alejandro Grimaldo to swap Benfica for the German team last summer.

"Simon Rolfes's fine-tuning, with his whole team supporting him, was fundamental. We signed players in accordance with the team's needs, in communication with the coach. In meetings between the three of us, we decided the priorities in each position and, in the summer, we managed to bring in the number one priority in each position. That doesn't happen very often. We had meetings with the players, the project was explained to them. Boniface and Xkaha weren't easy to negotiate with: Grimaldo came for free. It's an impressive team effort", Carro began by saying, praising the former Benfica player.

"In my opinion, he's the best left-back in Spain and, for me, he's a starter for the national team", the director stressed, highlighting the role of Xabi Alonso in Grimaldo's arrival.

"Without a doubt, it helps. For players like Xhaka and Grimaldo, knowing who Xabi Alonso is and that they're going to be coached by him is fundamental. The coach is always important for convincing the player. In this case, in addition, allied to the club's good work", he emphasised.

Fernando Carro also did not hide the fact that there is a big possibility that Xabi Alonso will one day coach Real Madrid.

"Xabi is already a great coach, young, with a long career ahead of him. He'll be one of the greats in history, just as he was as a player. I'm convinced that he'll also be a great coach. For us, it's a pleasure to work alongside him, to see the qualities he has for managing a squad, a dressing room, for making decisions, for leading training sessions... He has many qualities. And the job of a coach is very difficult, because you have to manage 40 people. On the other hand, I think that Xabi has found the perfect club in Bayer Leverkusen to carry out his idea. It's a very professional club, with a great organisation, and I think that we provide the ideal resources and context", he stressed.

"Real Madrid? It's possible that, at a certain point in his coaching career, he'll end up managing Real Madrid, yes", he concluded.
