Gary Neville admitted on Tuesday, in statements made on the podcast 'The Overlap', that he came to 'distrust' that Cristiano Ronaldo could ever reach the highest levels of world football.

The former Manchester United captain was already at Old Trafford when the Portuguese international was acquired from Sporting in the summer of 2003, for a fee in the region of 15 million euros, and revealed that the first impression he had of him was far from the most positive, in a number of aspects.

"When he arrived, he was quite skinny and hadn't developed his body. His decision-making was erratic. If he should cross, he would dribble. If he should dribble, he would cross. He always frustrated the midfielders, because he would go for the cross and they would advance, but then he would fall back," he said.

"He was everywhere, and in fact, I came to lose faith in him, because he didn't contribute to the attack, but he didn't fall back much either. He didn't help much, whereas Becks [David Beckham] always fell back and helped. It was quite frustrating," he continued.

"In 2006, he scored [against England] and knocked us out of the World Cup in Germany. He came back and suddenly his physique and body had changed. That season, when we won the title again, he became a machine and scored 35 or 40 goals," he added.
