Real Madrid knocked out reigning champions Manchester City on penalties on Wednesday and secured a place in the Champions League semi-finals, where they will face Arsenal.

After a 1-1 draw in regulation time and another 3-3 draw in the first leg, the tie had to go to extra time, but was only resolved in the penalty shootout.

The Merengues started badly, but were the most efficient in taking penalties, while Kovacic and Bernardo Silva missed for City.

Match report

The Merengues started the match in England better, with Rodrygo breaking the deadlock in the 12th minute, after an assist from Vinícius Júnior. City improved from that moment on, tried to take control of the match, but always failed when it came to penetrating the last third and threatening the opponent's goal.

The equalizing goal only came in the second half, through Kevin de Bruyne (76'), who appeared in the right place at the right time to finish and leave everything equal in the tie. The Belgian international even had a new goal at his feet a few minutes later, but this time he lacked aim and shot... over the bar.

The draw remained until the end of the 90 minutes and the game had to go to extra time.

In extra time, the balance was again dominant, but with Manchester City always more capable of holding the ball and creating situations around the Merengue penalty area. However, the night was not really inspiring and the last passport to the semi-finals had to be decided in the penalty shootout.

Real Madrid, the most successful team in the Champions League, started in the worst possible way, with Modric allowing Ederson to save, but Bernardo Silva and Kovavic compromised and Rudiger did not hesitate when it came to scoring the most decisive penalty.

All things considered, Real Madrid will play the semi-final against Bayern Munich, who eliminated Arsenal, while the other 'semi' will be between PSG and Borussia Dortmund.

Starting lineups

Manchester City: Ederson; Kyle Walker, Rúben Dias, Manuel Akanji; Josko Gvardiol; Rodri, De Bruyne, Phil Foden; Bernardo Silva, Jack Grealish and Erling Haaland.

Real Madrid: Andriy Lunin; Dani Carvajal, Nacho Fernández, Antonio Rudiger, Ferland Mendy; Eduardo Camavinga, Toni Kroos, Fede Valverde, Jude Bellingham; Rodrygo and Vinícius Júnior.

Preview

After the 'madness' experienced more than a week ago, at the Santiago Bernabéu, Manchester City and Real Madrid will face each other again this Wednesday, in the second leg of the Champions League quarter-finals.

The 3-3 draw in the first leg left everything open for the new duel, this time on English soil, and anything can happen tonight at the Etihad, with several Portuguese players present on the side of the English team.
