Andreas Pereira gave an extensive interview to Rio Ferdinand on Wednesday, on the podcast 'Vibe with FIVE', in which he explained the reasons that led him to swap PSV for Manchester United in January 2012, at just 16 years of age.

"A scout, Geoff Watson, contacted my father and said that Manchester United were interested in me. At the time, I had interest from other clubs in Europe, but I was always a Manchester United and [Cristiano] Ronaldo fan. I wanted to go, and when it happened, it was quick", he began by saying.

"I remember walking around Carrington, thinking that it was a fantastic complex and that I wanted to go there. Then they said 'Someone wants to talk to you'. And it was Fergie [Sir Alex Ferguson]. I remember him being in front of us, and I couldn't believe it", he continued.

"For the first time, I saw my father not knowing what to do. Ferguson told us something, but at first I didn't understand, because his English wasn't easy. Then he said 'There is always room for a Brazilian in my team'. That stuck in my mind", he completed.

Almost ten years later, the Brazilian international made the unexpected decision to head to Flamengo on loan, for his first 'adventure' at 'home': "I thought 'Am I really going to do this? Am I sure?'. In the end, you are never 100% certain".

"After Covid-19, I wanted to play. I was going crazy. I wanted to play in the Premier League. I wanted to show that I was good enough. I was very close to signing for Everton, and suddenly my father called to say 'Andreas, you have never played in Brazil, you are Brazilian'", he added.

"Everyone at Manchester United said 'You're crazy, you're going to stay in Brazil, you'll never come back to Europe'. In my family, everyone wanted me to go, but they thought 'No, what are you doing?'. I wanted to play in Brazil and I wanted to feel loved", he finished.
