Bernardo Silva was intimately linked to Manchester City's elimination in the Champions League on Wednesday, after shooting straight into the hands of Andriy Lunin in the penalty shootout against Real Madrid.
Darren Stanton is a body language expert, and on Thursday, he observed the behavior of the Portuguese international during the tiebreaker at the Etihad, reaching a definitive conclusion: "He suffered a total collapse in confidence in his abilities and technique".
"The crowd may have given Bernardo Silva time to compose himself by holding the ball, but he may have taken this as a sign of disapproval. This would have caused an even more stressful wait for the player before taking the penalty," he said, quoted by the British newspaper The Sun.
"It reminded me of someone messing around in the playground. There was a lack of focus or passion. The tongue is the most significant gesture. It has many different connotations depending on the context. Children stick their tongue out in a playful way," he continued.
"But one of the main reasons people do it is to try to concentrate. He stuck his tongue out in a self-soothing gesture. He was incredibly stressed, under immense pressure. But in slow motion, everything was wrong," he added.
