Paulo Fonseca falls on penalties and Lille misses the 'socks' of the Conference League

Paulo Fonseca's Lille still managed a comeback in the tie against Aston Villa (2-1, 3-3 on aggregate), but they ended up faltering in the penalty shootout (3-4), so it is the English team that advances to the 'semis' of the Europa Conference League. Emiliano Martínez was once again decisive in 'tricking'... the French.
The French team entered the field pressured by the defeat suffered in the first leg of the 'quarterfinals', at Villa Park, by 2-1, but they knew how to live up to the occasion, and made the Stade Pierre-Mauroy 'explode' with joy, after just 15 minutes, thanks to a precise shot by Yusuf Yazici.
With the Portuguese Tiago Santos on the field, the goal of the 'comeback' would end up happening at 68 minutes, through Benjamin André, who gave the best possible follow-up to an assist by Hakon Arnar Haraldsson.
It was then that, when everything seemed to be resolved, in the 87th minute, Matty Cash put the ball in the back of the net guarded by Lucas Chevalier, 'pushing' all decisions into extra time.
After half an hour of extra time without any change in the result, the penalty shootout followed, in which Emiliano Martínez ended up being the highlight, after having already helped the Argentina team to 'trick' France. The experienced goalkeeper saved two penalties, 'stung' the home fans and ended up causing disappointment in Paulo Fonseca's team.
Aston Villa now awaits the outcome of the clash between Fenerbahçe and Olympiacos to find out which opponent they will face in the next phase, with the Greeks having the advantage, due to the victory achieved in the first leg duel, by 2-3.
