Aston Villa sealed a place in the semi-finals of the Europa Conference League on Thursday evening, after visiting and defeating Lille, a team managed by Portuguese coach Paulo Fonseca, in a penalty shootout.

Emiliano Martínez once again spoiled the party for the French, just as he had done in the World Cup final, when he led Argentina to victory. This time, he saved two shots from the opposition, taken by Nabil Bentaleb and Benjamin André. However, that did not stop him from being at the centre of controversy.

The goalkeeper went into the 'penalty shootout' with a yellow card, which he had been shown in the first half. While waiting for his turn to defend, he provoked the opposition fans and was cautioned again... but he ended up staying on the pitch.

All thanks to an 'unknown' rule. This is because, in the 'rule book' of the International Football Association Board (IFAB), it states that "yellow cards shown during the match are not carried over to the penalty shootout, meaning all players and coaches start with a clean slate".
