Alejandro Grimaldo gave an extensive interview to Esquire this Saturday, in which, in addition to talking about his move to Bayer Leverkusen, he recalled leaving the Luz club for Germany last summer.

"It was a bit of a gradual thing. The truth is that last year I had a fantastic season and my initial mindset was to renew and, in theory, the club also wanted me to renew, but they didn't want to exceed the salary margin, they didn't want to make certain efforts that I believed I deserved at the time. So when we started negotiating, they didn't want to make those efforts, not even come close. So I decided to look elsewhere. I had offers from the Spanish league, the Premier League, the French league and the Bundesliga," said the Spanish international, highlighting the importance of Xabi Alonso in his decision.

"When Xabi Alonso contacted me, that's when the change happened. He did it two, three times, he was very interested. And in the end what I wanted was not only for the club to be interested in me, but for the coach to believe in me, who in the end is the one who will give you confidence and make you grow. They showed me the project and we reached an agreement," he stressed.

Grimaldo also recalled his time at Barcelona, where he completed his training, spent time in the B team, but with no chance in the main team.

"The reality is that it was a forced decision, Barça didn't want to count on me. I had six months left on my contract and they had the option of renewing me automatically, moving up to the main team. After four or five years in Barça B, I felt it was time to make that leap, but it didn't happen. I understand the club, because at that time there was Jordi Alba and it was difficult to move up to the main team, so I had to make the decision to leave," he explained. "I had offers from some Spanish clubs, but at the time Benfica was a club that played in the Champions League, I had already seen many players who had grown there and then gone on to other big clubs in other big leagues. I think it was an important step for me to grow as a footballer. And well, the truth is that it went very well for me, I was very happy there," he concluded.
