Referee attacked with fishing rod during youth match in Braga

The Barcelos Football Referees Association took to social media this Saturday to denounce the "cowardly aggression" that a referee suffered on Friday night in a match between GD Apúlia and CD Maximinense, in the second division of the Braga Football Association's youth championship.
According to the association, a CD Maximiense fan attacked an assistant referee with a fishing rod, breaking his head. The game, which was in the second half, was suspended.
"During the game and, in particular, during the second half, there were several threats and attempted attacks by the visiting team's fans against the assistant referee near them, including throwing lighters, stones and ice cubes. The pinnacle of these sad, inhumane and criminal actions occurred about 60 minutes into the game, when a fan attacked the assistant referee with a fishing rod, breaking it on his head," the statement reads.
"The game was suspended, and the GNR was called to the scene to report the incident, since the youth level does not require any type of security," the statement adds.
The association also stated that the referee needed to receive "hospital care and is recovering from the injury" and called for a "deep reflection on the football culture (or lack thereof) in the country".
