Fontelas Gomes satisfied with the presence of Portuguese refereeing in Euro'2024
The appointment of Artur Soares Dias for the 2024 European Championship is an award for all referees, said today the president of the Refereeing Council (CA) of the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF).

"We received with great satisfaction the appointment, by UEFA, of Artur Soares Dias and the assistant referees Paulo Soares and Pedro Ribeiro, as well as the video referee Tiago Martins for the final phase of the 2024 European Championship. More than an important effort from this group of referees, this appointment is the result of the work that Portuguese refereeing has been developing inside and outside our country", said José Fontelas Gomes.
In statements to Lusa, the president of the CA of the FPF considered the appointment of Soares Dias, who, in 2021, was already in Euro2020, the recognition of the federative investment "so that the referees have increasingly better working conditions so that they can grow in their respective careers".
"But it is also an award for all those who, Sunday after Sunday, from the districts to the professionals, strive to dignify this sector so important for Portuguese football, which, once again, deserves international recognition. It is also of the utmost justice to highlight the work of all those who contribute to training and education, components so important for the success of our referees", he continued.
Soares Dias, 44 years old, from the Porto association, is part of the list of 18 referees appointed by UEFA for Euro2024, which will be played in Germany, between June 14 and July 14, becoming the second Portuguese 'judge' to 'do it again' in the final stages, after José Rosa Santos.
António Garrido, in 1980, was the first Portuguese in a final phase of a European Championship, followed by Rosa Santos, in 1988 and 1992, Vítor Pereira, in 2000, Lucílio Baptista, in 2004, and Pedro Proença, in 2012.
Tiago Martins, from the Lisbon association and 43 years old, joins the restricted list of Portuguese referees in European competitions, but as one of the 20 VARs, as happened with João Pinheiro in Euro2020.
João Dias, responsible for training national referees, was also appointed for Euro2024 and will perform the same functions during the competition.
