League keeps heavy penalties for corruption and match fixing
The Portuguese Professional Football League (LPFP) decided today to maintain a "heavy sanctioning framework" in matters such as corruption or the distortion of results, despite the new legal regime for the integrity of sport providing for lighter sanctions.

The clubs, meeting in a general assembly held at the organization's headquarters in Porto, voted to maintain the suspension of two to 10 years for managers involved in acts of refereeing corruption, instead of the punishment of one to five years, contemplated in the new legal regime of the integrity of the sport and the fight against unsportsmanlike conduct, which entered into force in January this year.
"A sign was given that self-regulation is absolutely structuring for professional football, which does not hesitate in the need to give uncompromising responses in matters that are absolutely central to the credibility of this industry," the LPFP stressed in a statement.
In addition to this firm position on issues of corruption, match fixing, coercion and sports betting, the clubs also voted in favor of increasing sanctions on several points of the regulations.
Sports companies will now be more scrutinized and sanctioned if they fail to provide guarantees about the suitability and transparency of their corporate acts and potential incompatibilities.
There will also be tougher punishments for sports companies that do not have their tax and social security situation regularized, and also an increase in the penalty for those who fail the salary controls.
In this case, the sanctions for those who do not demonstrate that they have payments up to date involve the subtraction of between five and eight points in the classification, when until now it was two to eight points.
