Álvaro Carreras seems to be getting closer and closer to securing a permanent place at Benfica. The young Spanish full-back arrived at Luz in January this year, on loan from Manchester United, and is now on the fast track to Roger Schmidt's starting 11 and... to staying.

Alexander Bah's injury against Sp. Braga 'forced' Schmidt to field Carreras last Saturday, with the Spaniard taking over the left side of the defense and Aursnes switching to right-back, which should be the German coach's choice for the visit to Famalicão, scheduled for Sunday, in a match of the 32nd round of the I League.

Well, Carreras has been convincing the fans with his recent performances in a Benfica jersey, and those in charge of the reds will also be closer to triggering the purchase option that is included in the loan agreement signed with Manchester United at the beginning of this calendar year.

The eagles never revealed the amount, but the sports press guarantees that the red club will have to pay six million euros if they want to guarantee Carreras' continuity beyond this season. A value that thus allows for a more viable option for Schmidt, after the 'casting errors' starring Juan Bernat and David Jurásek, after Alejandro Grimaldo's departure, at 'zero cost', to Bayer Leverkusen.

April was a breath of fresh air

With a total of 13 games at the service of Benfica, it was only in this month of April that Carreras gained greater prominence in Roger Schmidt's choices. The 21-year-old full-back started on two occasions, against Moreirense and in Faro, and it was precisely in the Algarve that he even made his scoring debut, signing two performances that earned him praise.

Against Sp. Braga he came in 'cold', but he also knew how to respond, giving life to a left-back that has been recurrently occupied by the adapted Aursnes throughout the season. Next Sunday, in Vila Nova de Famalicão, he should have a new golden opportunity to play from the start.
