Telma Monteiro in the European quota and João Fernando with a direct place in Paris
Portuguese judoka João Fernando entered the direct qualification spot for the Paris2024 Olympic Games, by rising to the last eligible position in the -81 kg category, while Telma Monteiro 'rises' to the continental quota.

The update of the qualification for the Olympic Games, after a weekend of several continental championships, among which the Europeans, kept the selection with seven judokas in places of virtual qualification.
Until the end of May, the judokas will still have three more competitions of enormous importance and that can change the accounts in the race to the Games, such as the Grand Slams of Tajikistan (03 to 05 May), Kazakhstan (10 to 12) and the World Championships in Abu Dhabi (19 to 23).
The Europeans, which took place between Thursday and Saturday, allowed João Fernando to climb to the last place in -81 kg, after having added 84 more points in a competition that did not go well for him, with a defeat and a victory.
Telma Monteiro, who was in an eligible position, but in quota relocation, now enters the continental quota, which was assigned to João Fernando and also taking into account the accumulated points.
The Benfica judoka was honored by the European Judo Union on the occasion of the Europeans, given her achievements in the sport and especially in the continental championship, in which she is the record holder for medals, along with the German Barbara Classen - this when she could still compete in more than two categories per European -, with a total of 15.
After the Europeans, a competition in which she gave up in the repechage phase, as a precaution and when she returned after a five-month break, due to a rupture of ligaments in her left knee, Telma Monteiro became the fourth judoka of the 'European women's quota' (12 places to be assigned in addition to the 17 world judokas who qualify) with the most points in the Olympic qualification.
In a virtual place of direct qualification, Catarina Costa (-48 kg) remains, who maintained her eighth position after the bronze in the Europeans, Bárbara Timo (63 kg), Patrícia Sampaio (-78 kg) and Rochele Nunes (+78 kg), as well as Jorge Fonseca (-100 kg).
