"What feeds Manuel Fernandes is to see Sporting champion"
The son of the former Sporting player explains that his father watched the homage paid to him at the Estádio do Dragão.

When they took to the pitch before the kick-off, the players chosen by Rúben Amorim to start the match wore "retro" shirts with the number 9 on the back. Tiago Fernandes, the former player's son, reported that his father was pleased to see the tribute.
"He watched the game, we watched the game side by side and it was another beautiful moment and a source of pride for him and also to give him strength at this time, which is important for him to feel that the history he built throughout his life at a great club like Sporting was worth it. I have no doubt that this is what is fuelling him at the moment. He is waiting to see Sporting become champions. He is eager for that to happen", said Tiago Fernandes, in statements to TSF.
"The players also showed at this time that they are fighting for the championship, that they are in solidarity with him and that they also want him to get well quickly and be close to them, which was very important in all aspects. Both emotionally and physically, because for him Sporting is everything, it is the great love of his life, it is what makes him wake up in the morning and read the newspapers and see what is happening around the club. I think that what happened yesterday was another source of pride for him and also of emotion so that he can motivate himself and turn the situation around", he continued.
"The tribute they paid to my father yesterday is a very beautiful tribute, another tribute paid to a man who gave up a lot to serve Sporting throughout his life. My father was a person who never took his children to school, who did not see his children being born, who gave up a lot in family terms to always be ready to help Sporting, in 12 seasons as a player. And today, seeing this recognition from the members, the players and the current management is gratifying", he concluded.
