Paralympic Committee expects a delegation of 22 to 25 athletes at the Olympic Games

The president of the Portuguese Paralympic Committee (CPP), José Lourenço, said today that Portugal should be represented by 22 to 25 athletes, from eight sports, at the Paris2024 Paralympic Games, a lower number than that presented in Tokyo.

"We still don't have all the modalities closed (...), but I believe that we will be represented in eight modalities, by 22 to 25 athletes", said the president of the CPP, on the sidelines of the presentation of the book "The Right to Sport for Citizens with Disabilities", by Alexandre Miguel Mestre.

José Lourenço said that the delegation will be smaller than the one presented at the Tokyo2020 Games, in which Portugal was present with 33 athletes and won two medals.

"We will have fewer athletes than we had in Tokyo, where there were 33, and where the average age was around 36", said the CPP leader, warning of the need for renewal.

José Lourenço considered it "essential and urgent to bring more people with disabilities to sports practice" and said again: "If new talents do not appear, which is not very easy in four years, at the Los Angeles2028 Games we will have residual representation".

The official defended, once again, the need to change "the cultural paradigm, to reach families and tell them that people with disabilities can and should play sports".

Portugal, which added its 11th participation in the Paralympic Games at the Tokyo2020 Games, the 10th consecutive, has 25 gold medals, 30 silver medals and 39 bronze medals in its track record.

Just over 100 days before the Paris2024 Paralympic Games, which will be held from August 28 to September 08, Portugal has secured 15 places: four in athletics, four in swimming, three in boccia, two in canoeing, one in cycling and one in badminton.

In the qualification for the Paralympic Games, the places secured are non-nominal and will be assigned to athletes according to selection criteria defined by each of the sports federations, in conjunction with the CPP.
