TAD fines Sporting for Carlos Xavier's words about Taremi
The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) today dismissed an appeal filed by Sporting concerning a fine imposed due to statements made by former footballer Carlos Xavier about FC Porto's Iranian forward Mehdi Taremi.

The issue is a fine imposed by the Disciplinary Council (CD) of the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) on the 'leonine' club, after discriminatory statements by the former footballer about the forward on Sporting TV.
"The disciplinary body of the Defendant [the FPF] did well, therefore, to have administratively decided what it did," can be read in the judgment, to which Lusa had access today.
Thus, the TAD "deems the present arbitration action inadmissible", which targeted the FPF due to the fine of 15,300 euros imposed by the Disciplinary Council in October 2023.
In September, Carlos Xavier apologized to Taremi for the statements, denying that the intention was "xenophobia or racism".
Carlos Xavier's statements in a previous commentary space about the 'dragons' forward had already drawn criticism from the then president of FC Porto, Pinto da Costa, in addition to the Iranian football federation.
"There was a former player who on a sports channel referred to our Taremi as 'the Muslim', 'the Muslim who couldn't swim and now only knows how to dive'. How does a channel allow this? I don't know if SOS Racismo or other entities will react or the ERC [Regulatory Entity for Social Communication]. If he had kissed a woman, it would be a scandal, but everything else goes," said the then leader of the 'dragons'.
