He left Real after Cristiano Ronaldo arrived and regrets it: "Disillusionment"
Former Dutch striker recalls the moment he decided to leave the Spanish capital.

Ruud van Nistelrooy has admitted he regrets the decision to leave Real Madrid in the summer of 2009 to join German side Hamburg. Speaking to AS in an interview published on Wednesday, the former Netherlands striker explained his reasons for making the move, but now, over 15 years later, he admits he made a mistake.
"In the summer of 2009, Cristiano [Ronaldo], Benzema and Kaká arrived and Raúl and Higuaín were already there. I was 33 years old and I wanted to play in my last World Cup, the 2010 World Cup. I needed minutes and I spoke to Pellegrini [the 'Merengues' coach], who told me that it would be difficult because there was a lot of competition," began van Nistelrooy, before continuing.
"So I decided to leave in the winter market of 2010 and I went to Hamburg. I played a lot of games and scored goals, but then the Netherlands coach didn't take me to the World Cup. It was a big disappointment," concluded the former Netherlands striker, who scored 64 goals in 96 games for Real Madrid.
The high point of Ruud van Nistelrooy's career had come years earlier at Manchester United, where he played alongside Cristiano Ronaldo and scored 150 goals in 219 games.
