Carolina Marín wins Princess of Asturias Award for Sports
Spanish badminton player Carolina Marín, three times world champion of the sport, has won the 2024 Princess of Asturias Award for Sports, the jury announced today.

Carolina Marín, born in Huelva, in southern Spain, in 1993, was the Olympic badminton champion in 2016, being the first and only non-Asian athlete to win this title, as highlighted today by the jury of the Princess of Asturias Award.
She is also the only athlete to be a three-time world champion in this sport (2014, 2015 and 2018), seven-time European champion and "the first European to win two consecutive world titles (2014 and 2015)", added the jury, in a statement released by the Princess of Asturias Foundation, which awards the prizes.
In 2014, Marín became the first non-Asian athlete to enter the world's top 10 in badminton.
The Princess of Asturias Award for Sports was awarded last year to Kenyan marathon runner Eliud Kipchoge and, in previous editions, has distinguished names and entities such as the Olympic Refugee Foundation and the Refugee Olympic Team; American skier Lindsey Vonn; the New Zealand rugby team; the New York Marathon; the Spanish men's soccer team; tennis player Rafael Nadal and Formula 1 driver Michael Schumacher.
In the last two weeks, the Princess of Asturias Foundation announced the awarding of the 2024 Arts Prize to musician Joan Manuel Serrat and the Communication and Humanities Prize to Iranian director, designer and activist Marjane Satrapi.
In the coming days, the awards in the areas of Social Sciences, Literature, International Cooperation, Scientific and Technical Research and Concord will be announced.
Each of the awards has a monetary value of 50,000 euros and the awards ceremony will take place in October, in Oviedo, in northern Spain.
