Nadal eliminated from Rome Masters 1000

Facing the Estoril Open champion, the 37-year-old from Majorca lost in one hour and 33 minutes, saying goodbye for the first time in the second round of the Masters 1,000 in Rome since 2008.

Hubert Hurkacz, the ninth-ranked tennis player in the world, exploited the physical weaknesses of the former world number one to beat the 10-time champion at the Foro Italico and set up a third-round meeting with Argentine Tomás Martín Etcheverry.

After the defeat on the Roman clay, Nadal admitted that the decision on whether to participate in Roland Garros, where he holds the record with 14 titles, "is still not clear" in his mind at this time.

"If I had to say something, I would say that I am closer to going and giving it my all. Physically, I have problems, but they are not enough to keep me from participating in the most important tournament of my career. If I am well, I will be there to fight for what I have fought for in these 20 years," he added.

Nadal will arrive at the 'cathedral of clay', where he last won in 2022, with only eight matches played on clay this season.

"Today, it seems impossible to think about going to Roland Garros to compete for something, but physically I was not that bad. I hope to prepare well and get there in good enough condition to have a chance to fight," he said.

Roland Garros, the second Grand Slam of the season and the only one on clay, will take place between May 26 and June 9 in Paris.
