Kooij, 22, completed the 214 kilometers between Avezzano and Naples in 04:44.22 hours, beating the leader of the points classification, the Italian Jonathan Milan (Lidl-Trek), second today, and the Colombian Juan Sebastian Molano (UAE Emirates), third.

In the overall standings, the first places remain unchanged and the Slovenian Tadej Pogacar (UAE Emirates) leads comfortably over the rest of the peloton, with the Colombian Daniel Martínez (BORA-hansgrohe) in second, 02.40 minutes behind, and the British Geraint Thomas (INEOS) in third, 02.58 behind.

Pogacar, moreover, even had time to help launch Molano today, serving as the first in a 'train' for the sprinter who had the Portuguese Rui Oliveira as the final moment of launch, with the Colombian finishing on the podium.

Before the pink jersey 'played' among the sprinters, several cyclists tried to surprise the peloton at the end, including the French Julian Alaphilippe (Soudal-QuickStep) and the Ecuadorian Jhonatan Narváez (INEOS), both unsuccessfully due to the very high pace.

In the discussion, that is, in the last 50 meters, after a disappointed Narváez joined, Milan was on his way to a new victory, and reinforcement of the 'maglia ciclamino', but was overtaken by Kooij.

Still very young for the WorldTour peloton, Kooij already has an enviable record that includes 33 victories as a professional, but this is the most outstanding, and right on his debut in the big Tours, adding this to two triumphs in the ZLM Tour, three stages in Paris-Nice, two this season, or the Clássica de Almería, among others.

"We knew we would have to improvise in the last kilometer. (...) This is the victory I dreamed of", said the winner of the day, who praised the team's work to lead him to victory.

The day, moreover, could have belonged to the breakaway if the peloton had wanted it, forming a group of several elements, but only two cyclists decided to try, in the case of Mirco Maestri and Andrea Pietrobon, Italians from Polti-Kometa, without the capacity to reach the end on their own.

Rui Oliveira was 76th in the stage, after launching Molano, and climbed 19 places in the overall standings, to 136th place.

On Monday, the peloton enjoys the first rest day of this edition of the Giro.
